Recently I’ve tried to expand my soul music library. Among about a dozen awesome finds, Bettye Swan stands out. She was one of the great soul-singers of the 1960s. Despite the success of 1967’s “Make Me Yours” (above), Swan never achieved super-stardom and retired from singing to become an educator and Jehovah Witness. While she is little-known today, Bettye Swan was responsible for some beautiful music which is worth checking out if you are somebody that knows anything at all.

Talib Kweli and Dj Hi Tek’s (aka Reflection Eternal) Train of Thought (the album of which Move Somethin’ originally came) is one of the most ambitious, thoughtful, and complete albums in the history of rap music. It had a profound effect on me as a musician, a hip hop head and a person. Move Somethin’ was the album’s first single- a floor-rattling, grandiose lyrical display which, like the rest of Train of Thought, seamlessly blended form and content.

Like a lot of my music, this remix is an attempt to re-imagine classic hip hop through a contemporary lens. I think the end result is pretty cool.

Big Bill Bronzy is back for the New Year

It’s been a while since I posted on my Tumblr, but it’s a new year, and with that, I’ve made a resolution to get back to sharing and writing about music.

Anyway, and without any attempt of a fluid segue, Big Bill Bronzy aka Big Bill Broonzy aka Big Bill Broomsley was a fantastic blues-man that was born around the turn of the 20th century somewhere in the Mississippi Delta. He lived in Arkansas until he realized how shitty Arkansas probably was, and then he moved to Chicago in 1920.

Big Bill wrote and recorded a ton of music through the fifties. Though he seldom went back to the Delta, his music always carried a heavy twang and soulfulness that conjured the deep Southern Countryside. Plus half of his songs are stories about insane backwoods sharecropper shit. He doesn’t have a ton of music on the internets, but the above song is pretty awesome, and appropriate while your hangover is possibly still lingering. Enjoy and have a spectacular 2013.

I heard the original of this in a cab on the way home from DJing at Ella on Saturday night. Despite being complete strangers, the cab driver and I couldn’t help but to have a sing along. What started as under-our-breath murmurs escalated to unabashed belting by the time the last hook came around.

That made me think, “I should play this song in the club.” I couldn’t find it for free, but I found the accapella. So, here we are. Listen, enjoy, and share.
